Mail order

A mail order company typically imports or places orders for goods based on received customer orders, once a collect on delivery (C.O.D.) or small deposit has been placed by the consumer.

Most mail order complaints involve things that were ordered but not received. Other people have said that they have been billed for products they never received.

While most mail order companies are legitimate, it is good practice for consumers to learn as much as they can about the business before placing an order.

Ask for customer references before buying, and do an internet search to see if people have complained about non-delivery or late delivery of goods. Check www.bbb.org for the company's rating.

Beware of exaggerated claims, unusually low prices, and vague offers in advertising.

Keep all documentation including invoices and information about whether any deposit is refundable. Find out the physical address of the company if you are ordering online, and find out who the owner of the company is.

It is typical to pay a small deposit prior to receiving the items, but understand the terms and conditions before you pay. Avoid paying in cash because you may have some recourse through a credit card to get money back should items not be delivered.

Find out how long the delivery of your items should take prior to ordering. If it is for a wedding or special occasion, timing is essential.

Another important point to remember is that if merchandise is lost in the mail when it is being
returned by you for a refund, you may be required to pay for it.

Always insure other people's property when you send it in the mail.

Shop around for other local businesses to comparison shop prices.
